How to read a closure notice

  • The planned effective date is the employer's plan. It can move.
  • "Employees affected" is the count in that notice, not the size of the plant.
  • One site can have several notices. We list each with its own count and never add them up.
  • Confirmed site means OSHA or EPA lists, at the same address and under a manufacturing, wholesale or transportation code, a business that filed a notice for the site. Not confirmed means we found no such record; the row names whoever else is on record there.
  • Confirmed is as of the record's date: an OSHA inspection can be years old, so the row names the record next to the badge, with its year when it has one. It places an industrial business at the address then; it does not show what is inside today.
  • "The effective date has passed" means just that. It does not mean the site is empty.

Pennsylvania reads differently

L&I lists a month, not a notice date, gives no industry, and does not say whether a closure is permanent. So for Pennsylvania we show only sites that OSHA or EPA records confirm as industrial: 13 closures listed Nov 2025 to Oct 2026, with 38 more left out because no such record confirms the site. The Pennsylvania list · the California list.

Looking for a factory closing down auction?

A notice is not an auction notice. It says nothing about what is inside, who owns it, or how it will be sold. In a Chapter 7 bankruptcy the trustee collects and sells the assets (11 U.S.C. 704(a)(1)) and may hire auctioneers with the court's approval (11 U.S.C. 327(a)), so a bankruptcy row names the trustee when the docket lists one. A Chapter 11 is usually a reorganization: the company usually stays in charge as debtor in possession (1107(a), 1108), and a Subchapter V trustee named on the docket oversees the case while the company keeps running it (1183, 1184), so the contact there is the debtor's bankruptcy lawyer (how to approach a bankruptcy). A notice is an early reason to ask, not a sale.

Where this works

WARN notices from California (EDD) and Pennsylvania (L&I). A yard is covered only when its radius, up to 250 miles, reaches California or Pennsylvania. A covered result also lists business petitions from the courts below that sit inside the radius; farther away, the result says the area isn't covered yet, even where we read the court.

Courts we read

Business Chapter 7 and 11 petitions from these 14 U.S. Bankruptcy Courts (this list: poll of Nov 7, 2026 18:12 UTC):

  • Central District of California
  • Eastern District of California
  • Northern District of California
  • Southern District of California
  • Eastern District of Pennsylvania
  • Western District of Pennsylvania
  • District of Delaware
  • Northern District of Illinois
  • Southern District of Indiana
  • Eastern District of Michigan
  • Northern District of Ohio
  • Southern District of Ohio
  • Northern District of Texas
  • Eastern District of Wisconsin

The court feeds don't give the debtor's address, so a petition reaches your list only when its name matches exactly one plant in OSHA or EPA records, and the row says "by name only".

Not checked

  • WARN notices from any state other than California and Pennsylvania.
  • The Middle District of Pennsylvania: it publishes no RSS feed.
  • The Northern District of Indiana: it leaves petitions out of its RSS feed.
  • The Western District of Michigan: it has returned an empty RSS feed on our polls.
  • The Southern District of Texas: it publishes no RSS feed.
  • The Central District of Illinois: it is not polled yet.
  • The Southern District of Illinois: it is not polled yet.
  • The Eastern District of Texas: it is not polled yet.
  • The Western District of Texas: it is not polled yet.
  • The Western District of Wisconsin: it is not polled yet.
  • Every other U.S. Bankruptcy Court: we read no feed of theirs. Your result names the ones inside your radius.

Plant Closing Report, or a ZIP search?

Plant Closing Report is a paid newsletter of plant closures "across the United States (and some Canada)", every other Monday, with named contacts, for $500/mo, or $400/mo on a 6-month minimum term (plantclosing.report, read Nov 7, 2026). closurelead is $299/mo per territory, one territory per yard, and it does less: no named contacts, and WARN notices from 2 states. What it adds is a radius around your yard, an OSHA or EPA check of each site, and a government record link on every row. All the options compared.

Who should use what

  • Plant Closing Report. You want a person to call at each closure and will pay more for that. (plantclosing.report, read Nov 7, 2026)
  • WARNTracker. You want every new WARN notice in many states, every week, and you will filter it yourself. (warntracker.com/pricing, read Nov 7, 2026)
  • The free state pages. You have someone who will open the EDD report and the PA L&I page twice a week, sort out the closures, and look each site up.
  • closurelead. Your yard is in California or Pennsylvania, or within 250 miles of them. You want only the closures at industrial sites near it, and the bankruptcy petitions that match a plant there, each row linked to its government record. You can live without named contacts.
  • Not closurelead if your yard is more than 250 miles from California and Pennsylvania, or if a named contact at each closure is what you are paying for.

Questions

How do I find plant closures near me?

Type your yard's ZIP or city in the box at the top of this page. You see the closure notices at industrial sites within your radius (permanent closures in California; Pennsylvania's list doesn't say), and any business bankruptcy petition whose debtor name matches exactly one plant there, each linked to its government record. It works for yards whose radius, up to 250 miles, reaches California or Pennsylvania.

Are plant closure notices public?

In the states that publish them, yes. Under the federal WARN Act, a covered employer gives written notice of a plant closing to the state, or to the entity the state designates for rapid response (29 U.S.C. 2102(a)(2)). California EDD publishes the notices as a spreadsheet, and Pennsylvania L&I as a web page.

Does a closure notice mean there will be an auction?

No. A notice says the employer plans to close a site on a date that can move. It says nothing about what the site holds or how anything will be sold. In a Chapter 7 bankruptcy, the trustee may hire an auctioneer with the court’s approval (11 U.S.C. 327(a)). A Chapter 11 is usually a reorganization in which the company stays in charge as debtor in possession unless the court appoints a trustee (11 U.S.C. 1107(a), 1104).

How many will I see near me?

Fewer than a raw WARN list, because only closures at industrial sites are kept. Within 150 miles of ZIP 91761 (Ontario, CA), 3 sites counted from Oct 8 to Nov 7, 2026 (EDD's current file runs to Nov 4, 2026): 2 confirmed, 1 not confirmed. All of California had 19 industrial closure sites with 50 or more employees affected from Jul 1 to Nov 4, 2026, and OSHA or EPA records confirm 13 of them. Type your ZIP to see your own number.
